There has been a lot of talk about Technicolor’s CineStyle picture profile since its inception.

Some people think CineStyle will get the most out of your camera, however some others say the image comes out looking too soft and/or noisy.

As far as we know, this picture profile was developed using the Canon 5D Mark II — a camera that has a full-frame sensor, while the 60D does not.

Here is what we have found about CineStyle on the 60D:

CineStyle comes with the following settings:

• Sharpness: 0
• Contrast: -4
• Saturation: -2
• Color Tone: 0

Technicolor recommends a sharpness level set to 0, and this is the main reason why the image comes
out looking too soft. Shooting with the sharpness level set to 0 and applying sharpening in post did not
work as we expected, therefore after testing several settings we came up with the following rules:

1) If you are shooting people, close-ups of faces or inserts, adjust the sharpness level to 2.

2) If you are shooting landscapes or buildings, adjust the sharpness level to 4.

3) Using sharpness levels higher than the ones we recommend above will cause distortion (artifacts) in the image that cannot be fixed during post-production.

4) Regarding noise, using CineStyle at night or indoors without sufficient light and with ISO levels of 800 or higher results in images with a lot of noise.

5) Shooting videos indoors with plenty of light, outdoors under natural light or even in the shade will allow CineStyle to get the most out of your camera. CineStyle will also outperform other picture profiles.

6) Depending on the amount of light, the recommended ISO levels are: 160, 320, 640, 800, 1250, or
1600.

Note: These recommendations should work with other Canon cameras such as the 7D, the T4i, and the
T3i.

There is no magic formula for creating sharp and detailed time-lapses, but in all cases you must first set up your tripod, next set the camera to Manual (the setting is “M” on the camera dial), take into account the amount of light that is available, choose the right lens based on the amount of light available – you will need a faster lens (with a larger aperture in lower-light situations), and determine the interval between shots. You will need an intervalometer.

1) Use a sturdy tripod:

• There will be more wind the higher you go to capture a skyline – this will be the same if you are in the desert or near the ocean.

2) Determine how much light is available:

• This will determine the shutter speed, aperture (F-Stop) and ISO settings.

3) Choose the right lens:

• Use a telephoto lens (100mm+) when the subjects are miles away from the camera.

• Use a wide-angle lens (10mm-30mm) when the subjects are a few blocks from the camera. If you use this type of lens when the subjects are miles away then you won’t be able to capture much detail.

• Use a 50mm lens, which in reality is 80mm due to the 1.6 crop factor (Remember that the 60D has a cropped sensor), when you want to emphasize subjects which are located a short distance away.

4) Determine the interval of time between shots and configure the intervalometer:

• For a shutter speed of 2″ set the interval in the intervalometer at least to 8″. For a shutter speed of 1.6″, set the interval in the intervalometer at least to 7″. If you set the interval in the intervalometer to fewer seconds then the camera will fire the signal to take the next photo while it is still busy storing the previous one.

The general camera settings for all cases are:

Sharpness: 3
Contrast: -4
Saturation: 0
Color Tone: 0

Long Exposure Noise Reduction: ON
High Speed ISO Noise Reduction: Strong
Auto Lighting Optimizer: Strong
Peripheral Illumination Correction: Enable
