The year 2023 brought an explosion of music videos with imagery generated by artificial intelligence (AI) tools. Bands such as Queensrÿche, Voivod, and Dokken have released several AI-generated music videos, and although some music fans have expressed their discontent with this kind of visual art form (I can tell by reading a few comments posted below each AI-generated video), there seems to be a growing trend to continue producing music videos with these new tools.

Artificial intelligence has become an integral part of our lives, and it’s going to stay that way. With the help of AI tools, we can create limitless possibilities in terms of creativity and inspiration. As the popular expression goes, “The sky is the limit”.

Artists may hesitate to use technology to create art as they prefer a more natural approach. However, technology has been used to create art since the 1970s. Do you remember the dot matrix photo portraits sold in malls referred to as “computer artistry”? Nowadays, almost everyone uses software editing tools to retouch, fix, or enhance their art. Artificial intelligence takes it a step further with automatic content generation, which leads to a debate. The question is, who sets the boundary? The answer is no one!

Randy and I utilized the rotoscoping technique a few years ago to produce the video that follows. Although it may not seem completely authentic, the beauty of all art forms is that they grant you the liberty to create and express yourself in any number of ways. There is no need to adhere to any predetermined conventions or regulations, including those related to the production, filming, or editing of music videos.

Why are Legendary Rock Bands Using AI to Promote Their Music?

During an interview with the Border City Rock YouTube channel published on September 27th, 2023, singer Don Dokken revealed that his guitarist, Jon Levin, who is a close friend of Robby Hoffman (manager of Extreme), had informed him that Extreme was planning to release a video for every song on their album titled “Sixth”. Dokken praised this move, stating that it was a smart decision as it would help to keep the album relevant. He also mentioned that although creating so many videos would be expensive, he planned to adopt the same approach for his album titled “Heaven Comes Down”.

At the moment of writing this article, Nuno Bettencourt from Extreme is still using the traditional approach to produce their music videos, featuring the band playing alongside some storytelling. However, Dokken has already released two different videos, one of which was entirely generated by AI, and the other used animation with a vintage touch. As I mentioned earlier, Voivod and Queensrÿche, are also promoting their music with AI-generated videos.

Generative AI and the Future of Making Videos

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence that can create new content such as conversations, stories, images, videos, and music.

Let’s take into account that although everyone is using the first systems of generative AI for videos the quality of the imagery is impressive. If you’re still skeptical please watch our first video created entirely using artificial intelligence:

One of the main advantages I have seen with these AI tools is how quickly you can create scenes to complete your stories.

The process of creating a film or a music video involves constant evolution and refinement of ideas. Filmmakers are aware of the fact that there are three versions of their work – the script they write, the footage they shoot, and the final edited version. This is particularly relevant for music videos, especially when the primary objective is to tell a story through visuals.

What is the cost of producing an AI-generated music video?

Creating a music video using artificial intelligence tools is a much more affordable option than using traditional methods. With traditional methods, you would have to pay for location rentals, travel expenses, city permits, team hiring, equipment rentals, actor hiring, insurance, and other costs. However, using AI software is a different story. All you need is a good source of images, which you can enhance or use as a starting point to create actions with the AI video tool of your choice. Alternatively, you can ask the system to generate the visual elements based on the story you want to illustrate. When dealing with generative AI systems, your creativity and writing skills are of utmost importance.

We have a vast archive of original stock footage that we have collected over the past several years. Therefore, we do not require any licenses for different video projects as we have a plethora of images to use. Our archive includes cityscapes, time-lapse photo sequences, aerial shots, the Milky Way, forests, lakes, seascapes, and more.

How long does it take to create an AI-generated music video?

The amount of time it takes to create a music video, whether it is generated by AI or made traditionally, depends on various factors such as the complexity of the story conveyed in the song and the preferences of the artist. However, an AI-generated music video can be produced at a faster rate than a traditional one. Although the editing phase may still require some time, in general, the production process will be quicker.
